Sailing Equipment

Each of the items below marked with a are mandatory

El Toro or Optimist dinghy in seaworthy condition, preferably self rescuing

Bailer (cut down plastic jug like a bleach bottle works fine) - Include if renting an RYC Optimist.

Paddle (no smaller than a ping pong paddle) - Include if renting an RYC Optimist.

Boom Vang - Include if renting an RYC Optimist.

10-15 foot long painter suitable for towing  - Include if renting an RYC Optimist.

Tiller extension  - Include if renting an RYC Optimist.

Hiking strap  - Include if renting an RYC Optimist.

Jibe preventer also called a JC strap (for intermediates and advanced)

Masthead wind indicator

Mast blocks (preferably with varying thickness to adjust your rake)

Sailing clothes; Pack for a week

            Definitely bring clothes and shoes that can get wet.

            Optional; wetsuits and spray suits, you might want to pack them, but are usually not necessary.

Waterproof watch with a countdown timer (for intermediates and advanced racers)


Essential Safety Items

Water bottle  (Very important to avoid dehydration while out on the boat)

Sun Screen Lotion (NECESSARY, sailors will be REQUIRED to apply lotion every morning and frequently reminded throughout the day)

Hat and sunglasses, with retainer straps. (Protect your eyes from glare and avoid loosing you hat...)

Life jacket, USCG approved, that fits properly. ( Required by Coast Guard and Sail Camp staff)


 Camping and Personal Items

Tent and sleeping bag (sleeping mat or pad and a favorite pillow)

Clothing for a week (Expect very hot temperatures by day and include long pants and sweatshirt for occasional cool nites and morning)

Shoes for land and water (sneakers, sandals, water shoes)

Swimming suit, dah!

Shower and beach towels

Personal items (tooth brush, hair brush or comb, shampoo, soap, wash cloth, etc.)

Notepad and pencils

Flashlight and extra batteries

Insect repellent


 Do NOT Bring  lighters, matches or flames of any kind. Sailors who need to burn the ends of lines can ask instructors for help.

 Do NOT Bring  skateboards, skates, scooters, bikes, and boom boxes.
